HTTP authentication with PHP
The HTTP Authentication hooks in PHP are only available when it is running as an Apache module and is hence not available in the CGI version. In an Apache module PHP script, it is possible to use the header() function to send an "Authentication Required" message to the client browser causing it to pop up a Username/Password input window. Once the user has filled in a username and a password, the URL containing the PHP script will be called again with the predefined variables PHP_AUTH_USER, PHP_A ...

Tweeting from the Command Line with Twyt
As you’ve probably realized by now, I love the command line. Part of the reason for my obsession with the command line is that I work at the command line for most of every day at my day job. With the exception of the few Windows hosts to which I must connect for certain operations, I never see a graphical interface. And, in keeping with my need to stay command line connected, I sought out a command line Twitter client to help me stay current with my all-important Twitter statuses. I chose the so ...

Securing PostfixAdmin
Many administrators who use Postfixadmin, a web based tool to manage virtual domains on Postfix, would like to secure the transactions between the PostfixAdmin program and the administrator. At the same time often you do not want to add the extra burden of SSL on the whole domain but just want to secure one directory. The solution is to create a certificate for that one directory only and also locking that directory with a password so only administrators can gain access. The example is on an Ubuntu 9.10 server, which will be very similar to most server procedures. ...

Power7: Big Blue Eye on UNIX
"The scuttlebutt is that IBM seemed perfectly content to wait until May to launch the Power7-based Power Systems servers, but something changed and compelled the company to move up the announcement of its first machines using the eight-core processor to today. Big Blue is not in a habit of explaining its motives or its timing for product launches, but it seems clear that IBM wanted to get out in front of a whole lot of processor and systems launches that are expected between now and the summer." ...

Dropping Mac OS X 10.4 Support in Gecko 1.9.3
Mozilla has announced that they are going to drop support for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger in Safari definitively. "Mac OS X 10.4 was released in April of 2005 and a lot has changed since then," Josh Aas writes, "We would like to take advantage of more modern technologies on Mac OS X and 10.4 support has been a hindrance. Where we can work around supporting 10.4, doing so consumes valuable time and effort. Neither Chrome nor Safari has to deal with this." ...

Installing PHP 5.3, Nginx And PHP-fpm On Ubuntu/Debian
Since Apache is most of the time a memory hungy process, people

clearly not the only webserver available. A few good examples are
lighttpd and nginx. In this tutorial I will show you how to install it
on your Ubuntu server. This tutorial also applies to Debian, though.

Innovation on Linux and UNIX
Innovation is at the heart of our enterprise search strategy, and a commitment to innovation is what brought FAST and Microsoft together. When we announced the acquisition two years ago, we said that we were committed to cross-platform innovation?that we?d ?continue to offer stand-alone versions of ESP that run on Linux and UNIX,? and that we would provide updates to these versions to address customer concerns and add new features. Over the last two years, we?ve done just that. We?ve continued to sell, support, and update the Linux and UNIX versions of FAST ESP, and we?ve designed the next wave of FAST products (scheduled for release in the first half of calendar year 2010) to include a cross-platform search core that has been extended to take advantage of web services and support mixed-pl ...

GNOBSD - killed by GUI-is-for-wimps hacker culture
Stefan Rinkes, a big fan of OpenBSD, had decided to make an effort and create something that is now common in the Linux world, but which had not been done in OpenBSD - an OpenBSD-based live DVD with automatic hardware detection which would boot into a popular graphical desktop and which would also have a point-and-click graphical system installer. The result was a "distribution" called GNOBSD.
